Expert Appraisals

Insurance Evaluations

The purpose of this document is to obtain insurance coverage for your jewelry or timepieces on your homeowner's, renter’s policy or with an independent insurer of jewelry.

Items are fully researched and given a valuation at the appropriate and most common market level.

The appraisal is written for the retail replacement value of an item should it become lost, stolen or badly damaged. It is the written description of an item in which the insurance company and its underwriters will use to determine the premium and amount of insurance needed, depending on the terms. Make sure you know what your policy covers.

Estate Evaluations

Discover Your Asset’s True Value

Estate jewelry appraisals are based on the fair market value of items as of the decedent’s date of death or alternative date as determined by the executor and are used for the estate’s tax liability. These values are lower than the insurance replacement values. In cases where the items are kept rather than sold, the values are based on fair market value in the secondary retail level in the appropriate market.

Colored Stone Identification

Is this stone genuine?

Do you have a loose gemstone or a piece of jewelry with a stone and you don’t know what it is? There are many green stones that could be emerald, peridot, tourmaline or garnet. A red stone could be a ruby, spinel or garnet. Is your dark blue stone a sapphire, topaz or tanzanite? Did you know that sapphires, spinels and garnets come in almost every color? Many of these have synthetic counterparts. Some stones are even composed of two pieces of different stones called doublets. It may be valuable or just a pretty piece of glass but without the proper tools and knowledge to identify it, you’ll always be guessing. For a nominal fee, I’ll be happy to look at it, run some basic gemological testing and come to a conclusion without you having to pay for a full written report.

  • Why do fees vary so much?
If you receive a ‘free’ appraisal from the seller, it is really just a Documentation of Purchase. It should state what was sold, the grading, stone weights and the actual transaction price. Do not be fooled by inflated documentation. This is nothing more than a marketing tool. Also, be aware that if someone says they can do an appraisal for considerably less – they are not doing you a favor. The appraisal report will be scant and may not be backed up by any level of expertise. In case of loss or theft — you could have problems. It is fair to charge for the amount of work and research required to complete your project properly, and to ensure it will hold up in court if required. You are covered only as well as your appraisal report is written and by the qualifications of the appraiser. Dollar amounts, if higher than warranted, are not necessarily the amount you will be awarded in case of loss, theft or damage. You have to understand your individual policy and how you are covered. Do not rely on inflated and often fictitious dollar values, or on appraisals with very little information. This will benefit your insurer and cost you money in premiums — but may not “make you whole” in case of a loss.
  • What kind of appraisals and services do you offer?
The services PGA offers range from USPAP compliant Insurance & Estate Appraisals, Stone Identification, Expert Consultations, Diamond Grading, New Purchase Verifications, and Equitable Distribution.

About the Appraiser

I am a Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and a Certified Appraiser from the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA), living and working in Denver for the last 21 years. I have extensive knowledge of the jewelry and appraisal industry. Because I am a Certified Member of NAJA, the appraisals I deliver are USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) compliant, and adhere to the NAJA report writing standards, an important distinction in today’s environment. The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is the generally recognized ethical and performance standards for the appraisal profession in the United States. USPAP was adopted by Congress in 1989, and contains standards for all types of appraisal services, including real estate, personal property, business and mass appraisal.

Many insurance companies are transitioning to policies requiring USPAP compliant appraisals, inherently performed and signed by a Graduate Gemologist.

Since 2018, I have inspected and determined the value of my clients' assets. As your professional Graduate Gemologist Appraiser, I guarantee accurate valuations and for a fair price.
